Recipe Ingredients

This dairy free chicken pasta comes together with simple, wholesome ingredients that create a deliciously creamy dish:

  • Chicken breasts
  • Whole grain pasta
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Lite coconut milk
  • Low sodium chicken broth
  • Fresh asparagus
  • Lemons (juice and zest)
  • Garlic
  • Herbs (oregano, parsley, dill)
  • Sea salt and pepper
See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Ingredient Notes

  • Lite coconut milk is the star ingredient that makes this sauce creamy without dairy. It has a subtle flavor that doesn't overpower the dish while providing the perfect silky texture.
  • Fresh herbs like parsley and dill elevate this dish from good to great. While dried herbs can work in a pinch, fresh herbs provide bright, vibrant flavors that really make this recipe shine.
  • Whole grain pasta adds a nutty flavor and extra nutrition, but you can easily substitute gluten-free pasta if needed without affecting the overall taste of the dish.

Pro Tips

This recipe is my go-to for a quick dinner fix. For the best results, don't rush the sauce-simmering step. Allowing the coconut milk to reduce slightly creates a thicker, more luxurious sauce that clings beautifully to the pasta. Also, be sure to season at every step—salt the pasta water, season the chicken before cooking, and taste the final dish before serving to adjust seasonings as needed.

Storage and Reheating

  • Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The flavors often deepen overnight, making this dish even more delicious the next day.
  • Freezing: While you can freeze this dish, the texture of the sauce may change slightly upon thawing. Freeze in individual portions for up to 2 months for quick meals.
  • Reheating: Gently reheat on the stovetop with a splash of chicken broth or water to loosen the sauce. Alternatively, microwave on medium power, stirring halfway through to ensure even heating. View complete guide to storing and reheating chicken dishes.

Additions & Substitutions

Additions:

  • Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick that complements the creamy sauce.
  • Toss in some sun-dried tomatoes for a sweet-tangy flavor boost.
  • Include spinach or kale for extra greens—just stir them in at the end until wilted.
  • Top with dairy-free cheese alternatives for an extra layer of flavor.

Substitutions:

  • Swap chicken for shrimp or white beans for a different protein option.
  • Replace asparagus with broccoli, peas, or zucchini based on seasonal availability.
  • Use almond milk or oat milk instead of coconut milk for a different flavor profile (though the sauce won't be quite as creamy).
  • Substitute lemon with lime for a different citrus note.

FAQs About This Dairy Free Chicken Pasta

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of heavy cream in pasta sauce?

While Greek yogurt is a great substitute for heavy cream in many recipes, it's not suitable for this dairy-free recipe. Stick with coconut milk for the best dairy-free creamy texture.

What milk alternative is creamiest for pasta sauce?

Coconut milk is the creamiest dairy-free alternative for pasta sauces, providing a silky texture similar to heavy cream. Cashew cream is another excellent option if you prefer a nut-based alternative.

What can I use instead of milk in creamy pasta?

Besides coconut milk, you can use unsweetened almond milk thickened with a bit of dairy-free flour, cashew cream, or even pureed silken tofu for a protein-packed creamy base.

What Can I Serve with This Chicken Pasta?

This dairy free chicken pasta recipe is a complete meal on its own, but you can elevate your dinner with some simple sides. A crisp green salad with a light vinaigrette provides a refreshing contrast to the creamy pasta. Garlic bread made with olive oil instead of butter keeps the meal dairy-free while offering something to soak up the delicious sauce.

So, I felt like the instructions were missing at the end. I improvised and added the herbs towards the end and then just put everything together before serving. My coconut milk didnt thicken so I ended up having to make a rue to get it thicker. Taste/Flavor was good. I did end up adding some cajun and garlic powder to get a more intense flavor since the lemon was pretty subtle and somewhat bland. Otherwise - the recipe is a good one and we likely will make this again (with the substitutes mentioned).
